YOUTOPIA FESTIVAL
10.12.2018 - 16.12.2018 | UFER Studios, Berlin-Wedding
commemorating 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
organised by the Little Black Fish Collective, Berlin
"The Universal Declaration of Human Rights" is a Utopia – probably the farthest from reality that the human imagination has hitherto conceived.
December 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of this Declaration. But what exactly has been "declared" here? "Human rights" is a catch-phrase that slips off every tongue on the planet, along with the simultaneous awareness that its application has not been effective anywhere in the world. So what exactly are the contents of this declaration, and why is it that after 70 years it remains just a set of clauses that has no reality anywhere?
The so-called "refugee crisis" dominates the current socio-political debate in Europe; this debate chiefly centres around consequences for the countries in which the "refugees" arrive, and around the question of whether they come from safe homelands. Lawmakers and NGOs often have widely differing definitions for "safe". Here again, the question is one of the application of human rights and their legal standing.
A closer look makes it evident that this is not at all a new problematic. It is always a worthy exercise to re-examine this Declaration; to explore it from different perspectives to enable a closer understanding; and to exercise our imaginations to propose forms for its application.
